Tatted Square Motif

I thought I’d challenge myself by designing a circle within a square. It was a real design challenge, but it’s reasonably easy to stitch up.

The heart-shaped rings are easy to do, but they can be hard to close. I suggest you use a larger-sized thread, and that you tat a little more loosely than normal.

This pattern uses one tatting shuttle and is an experienced beginner pattern (because of the heart-shaped rings). It is about 2 inches square (6 cm) when done with size 20 thread.

I used Lizbeth Linen Medium Color 693 in size 20.

If you want to repeat this motif to make a larger item, make the HeartR on the second row as follows.
8ds p 3ds p 3ds sp 5ds j to sp, 3ds p 3ds p 8ds

This will give you picots on the HeartR for making connections to adjoining motifs.
